Emily was raised in a church-going Presbyterian home that was overall good, yet still a bit “dysfunctional.” Her father, a minister, lead her to the Lord when she was eight, prior to joining the church.
At nineteen, when faced with discouragement and conflict at home and church, Emily gave up a superficial faith and pressed into what she would later call the first of two dramatic moves of the Lord on her life. The second move would occur much later—after divorce and an extended period of singleness and heartache. Her first book, Finding the Secret Place: 8 Keys to Experiencing God’s Presence, was birthed during that timeframe.
Emily was trained by Christian Healing Ministries in Jacksonville, FL and became a volunteer prayer minister there. It was out of that experience that she began working with individuals who wanted to enjoy the same intimacy and healing in their relationship with God that she had found.
In 1981, Emily graduated from Queens College (now Queens University) in Charlotte, N.C. with a degree in English literature. Early on, she taught school and then stayed home with her children. Later, she pursued a path in financial services and insurance before marrying Larry and becoming a fulltime writer, teacher, and prayer minister.
